Media in your Life is Must Reading for Mass Com Students
This book is an excellent introduction to mass media in America. It is one of the few attempts around to draw together a look at the various forms of mass communications--from MTV to the movies to the Internet. While intended for the college student, it also is a good reference for anyone seeking to understand the rapidly changing media landscape in America.

Pets, Vets, and Marty Howard Review
Pets, Vets, and Marty Howard

This book is about a boy named Marty Howard. In the beginning of the book, he gets a job at a veterinary clinic. He thought that was pretty good to have a paying job that he liked at only 12 years old. He sees some interesting things while he is there. Spaying, neutering, castrating, and delivering animal babies are just some of the things he gets to help with as well as watch.

One day someone dropped off an expensive guinea pig at the front desk and said his family didn't want him anymore. Marty came to the rescue and took it home. He didn't know what his mother would say, but after some coaxing, she gave in. He gave it to his brother, Nick. Nick named it Gooney.

They also found some puppies, which Marty took home also. He never told his parents about this, though. He ended up putting them in a department store window, and feeding and watering them every day until people took them.

This was a very interesting book, and I recommend it to anyone who likes pets and animals.

The Portable Roman Reader
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (January, 1977)
Author: Basil Davenport
Average review score:

Wonderful for a student
I'm a freshman in high-school and am very interested in Classical literature and history. This book is wonderful. It gives you a flavor for some of the greatest Roman authors, and also gives you a feel for the time they were written. The introduction is wonderfully written, and his insight on the Roman culture is really quite interesting. I wish Davenport had done more books, one on Greek literature would have been spectacular, but to my knowladge there are no more. :( I highly recomend this book for a young person interested in Roman authors. He'll take you from early Roman comedy through the Republic, the Golden and Silver Ages, to the bitter end of the Empire.

Probability and Random Processes an Introduction for Applied Scientists and Engineers
Published in Hardcover by McGraw Hill College Div (June, 1970)
Author: W. Davenport
Average review score:

Excellent and relevant coverage of material
Davenport's "Probability and Random Processes" is an excellent, readable text on this subject for engineers/scientists/etc with an intermediate to advanced level of mathematics background. The important chapters are: 3) Probability, 4) Random variables, 5) random vectors, 6) functions of rv's, 7) statistical averages, 8) estimation, sampling, and prediction, 9) random processes (a wide variety), 10) linear transforms, 11) spectral analysis, 12) sums of independent rv's, 13) the poisson process, 14) the gaussian process.

Clearly this book covers a wide breadth which is the attraction for me. His approach is rigorous yet approachable through many interesting examples. Many examples deal with digital communcation of binary data. What this book is not is a highfalutin, axiomatic, terse text for those with PhD's in mathematics. McGraw-Hill recently republished this classic 1970 volume in its "classic textbook reissue" series. The author, Davenport, was in fact of Prof. at MIT.

I highly recommend this text for those who want a rigorous understanding of random processes.

Roots of the Rich and Famous
Published in Paperback by Taylor Pub (October, 1998)
Authors: Robert R. Davenport and Robert R. Davenpore
Average review score:

Scoop on JFK
On page 30 the author reveals a "well-kept secret". JFK's first wife was Malcom Durie. His father Joseph P. Kennedy had enough money to squelch information about this marriage. It is doubtful that even Jackie knew. (I can guarantee you that Nixon did not know.)

Yet, on the Internet, I could find no search results on any of these things. Still, this is an interesting book. The author was an attorney with the Justice Department so his revelation should have some validitity.
